How
to Get Yourself on National TV for Maximum Marketing Exposure
Plus the Priceless Credibility
By Martin Wales
July 2003
You
can get $1,000’s and up to $1,000,000’s worth
of recognition, priceless credibility and profitable product
placement - if you can successfully get yourself media coverage.
You
can’t get much more excited than this! My company
and I were going to be featured on the national evening
news. Not just a mention in the first 20 minutes of headlines
of world issues and tragedy either.
Nope.
It was part of 20-minute “feature” on the magazine
format following the day’s major news. Over a million
viewers on the live broadcast and then they rebroadcast
it, at least 3 MORE times. Imagine what you’d
have to pay to get 1 minute of advertising on during this
prime time. And you can get it for FREE.
You
want to know the secret of being the one selected and getting
on TV in front of over a million viewers? How about being
introduced by the trusted friend of all those viewers –
the nationally recognized and loved TV news anchor?
Of course
you do. You’ll find out how when you keep reading…
There
were really three major steps to making it happen.
First,
I network with as many people and as much as I
can. I was alerted about the media opportunity through a
friend, who heard from one of his business colleagues that
a news producer was making inquiries. He knew the executive
producer was looking for someone in a specific situation.
Second,
I was a member of The Association of Management
Consultants. This simultaneously gave me credibility and
it was where the news people had originally gone looking
for a consultant who lived in Canada and worked with clients
in the United States or who lived in Canada but was employed
by an American company, making US dollars.
Third,
I was listed in a media directory of experts for
TV, radio and print journalists. This confirmed with the
producer, once we were in contact, that I was credible and
experienced in dealing with the media. She didn’t
want to put someone on the national news who was going to
be mess up, e.g. too nervous, a mumbler, etc.
Now
I have to confess there is more to it. More than I can reveal
in this short note.
But
I can’t resist a little bit more…
For
one thing, you need to know how to handle the first interview
over the phone when they decide if you’re suitable
and if you “fit” their story. See, I knew they
were looking for a certain slant and had to adjust my language
and positioning to “fit” perfectly while still
meeting MY objective – getting my mug on the top right
hand corner of your television behind the trusted anchor.
There
are many other subtle things, that combined, get you in
the news. I just wanted to introduce you to the three major
points so you remember to start doing all of them –
if you’re not already.
Always
remember: If it’s not news then the media
isn’t interested!
